Heian Shrine
“Heian Jingu” was built in 1895 (Meiji 28) in 1100 and enshrines Kanmu as the god of worship. The vermilion and green hall absolutely look beautiful on the white sand.
One of the highlights is the “Kamien”, a vast pond spring strolling garden of about 10,000 tsubo that surrounds the shrine. It was created by Ogawa Jihei, the 7th generation gardener who also worked on famous gardens such as Maruyama Park and Murin-an.
Also, on October 22, one of the Three Great Festivals of Kyoto, “Jidai Matsuri,” is held, and a procession of people differently dressed based on eight eras such as Edo, Muromachi, and Kamakura era.
You can see the procession cruise with the sound of drums.
