Abuto no kannon

“Abuto no kannon” is a temple of the Rinsai sect that was built by Terumoto Mouri during the Genkame era (1570-73) and stands on the tip of Cape Abuto. The rough rock surface protruding into the blue sea and the red-painted Kannon-do standing on it are featured in numerous masterpieces such as Hiroshige Ando’s Ukiyoe and Naoya Shiga’s novel “Dark Nights”.

Abuto no kannon is also a nationally designated important cultural property and has long been known as a prayer place for safe navigation, childbirth, and safe delivery. I
