Enjoy local beer and whiskey with ~Nagahama Roman Beer ~
Nagahama Roman Beer is located about a 5-minute walk from Nagahama Station and has a restaurant with a brewery. They have also brewing craft whiskey since November 2016.
Beer and Whisky
Did you know that the beer and whiskey manufacturing processes are halfway the same?
Both are made from malt.
After hot water at 60 to 70 ° C and the milled malt are mashed, the wort is produced in about 1 hour.
From here, beer is made through the steps of [boiling] ⇒ [hopping] ⇒ [impurity removal] ⇒ [fermentating] ⇒ [aging].
Whiskey is completed by adding yeast to wort, [fermenting] ⇒ distilling the mash, and barreling and aging the undiluted whisky.
Brewery
In addition to the three representative brands “Nagahama Ale”, “Ibuki Weizen”, and “Tankai Pilsner”, Nagahama Roman Beer also brews seasonal craft beer.
Nagahama Roman Beer uses only malt, hops, and yeast, and is not filtered or heat-treated, bringing out the umami flavor.
There is fermentation tanks on the second floor of the building, where ale beer is fermented for 5-10 days and lager beer (pilsner) is fermented for about 2 weeks.
On the other side is the storage tanks. You can enjoy the fresh beer sent directly from them at the adjoining restaurant. You can also buy a bottled beer at the shop.
Limited beer is produced only 1,800 liters each season, and it will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis so don’t miss it. Currently, they sell “Pomegranate Ale” and “Dark IPA”.
Once a day, they scrape malt lees after removing impurities. This process is basically often done after lunch time, but the time varies on the day so you might be able to see it during lunch at the restaurant.
This lees is sent to neighboring farmers as fertilizer and is often used as feed for Omi Shamo chickens.
Whiskey Distillery
Nagahama Distillery is one of the smallest distilleries in Japan.
This whiskey is manufactured with the strong desire that “craft whiskey will please whiskey fans not only in Japan but all over the world even after 100 years.”
We observed the state of distillation.
This large distiller is used to distill fermented mash. The temperature of the kiln is 90 ℃.
By cooling the vaporized alcohol, “new make”, which is the undiluted whiskey, is extracted.
The extracted new make is aged in barrels before the “single malt Nagahama” is completed. The new make is also available at the shop.
In addition, the world blend malt whiskey “AMAHAGAN”, which is a blend of overseas malt whiskey and self-made sake, is also sold at the store.

Restaurants
At the adjoining restaurant, you can enjoy beer and whiskey, as well as dishes that uses plenty of local Shiga ingredients.
◇ Omi beef Ichibo roast beef
We recommend “Omi beef Ichibo roast beef”.
They carefully select A4 rank or higher Omi beef, and, with various seasonings such as salt, wasabi, and sauce, you can enjoy the taste of lean meat and the sweetness of marbled “Ichibo”, which can only be taken in small quantities from a cow.
◇ Fish & Chips
The most popular is “fish & chips”. Large white fish and crispy batter as good as authentic England go great with beer!
Craft beer is used for the batter. You can enjoy it with tartar sauce or vinegar.
◇ Nagahama Coffee
“Nagahama Coffee” is a bittersweet coffee which coffee, sugar and plenty of fresh cream are mixed with whiskey from Nagahama Distillery.
It’s sweet at the beginning, but the flavor of whiskey and the bitterness of coffee comes as you drink, which matches the fresh cream.
It warms up to the core of your body.
When you visit Nagahama City, why not go to Nagahama Roman Beer and enjoy beer, whiskey, and food.
