Hakodate Orthodox Church

Built as a shrine attached to the Consulate of the Russian Empire in 1860, Hakodate Orthodox Church is Japan’s first Orthodox church. Although it was burnt down by a big fire, it was rebuilt in 1916 as a Russian-style Byzantine-style shrine. This church is also designated as an important cultural property of the country.

The sound of the bell is so that beautiful that it is also known as “Gangan Temple”.
