Lake Notoro is located in the western part of Abashiri City; the easternmost of Hokkaido. What makes this lake a must-visit place is the coral grass (Salicornia) that grows in about 4ha around Ubaranai on the south side of the lake.

Coral grass (Salicornia) is a plant that grows in wetlands that contain a lot of salt. Due to Lake Notoro’s unique environment where the Sea of Okhotsk and a part of the lakeshore merge, it’s perfect for the coral grass to grow.

This grass begins to turn red in late August, and from late September to early October, you can see the scenery of a crimson carpet.
