Itsukushima Shrine literally stands in the sea. As the tide gets higher, the main hall becomes to look as if it was floating on the sea.

Founded by Saeki no Kuramoto at the end of the 6th century during the time of Empress Suiko, the current graceful Shinden-zukuri shrine is built by Taira no Kiyomori. In 1996, Itsukushima Shrine was registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

The Otorii, which stands about 200m off the main hall of worship, is made of natural wood of camphor tree and has a height of about 16m and the main pillar’s circumference of approximately 10m around.

At night, this shrine is lit up every night and you can see a fantastic night view different from the daytime.
